How Far in Advance Should You Really Start Planning a Trip?

One of the most common questions we’re asked is: “Is it too early to start planning?”
Short answer: usually no.
Longer answer: it depends on the type of trip, the time of year, and how much flexibility you want.

In this post, we break down realistic planning timelines for different types of travel, and explain why starting early often leads to better options and less stress.

For trips like theme parks, cruises, destination weddings, and honeymoons, availability can disappear quickly. Flights, resorts, dining reservations, and special experiences often open months in advance and the best options tend to go first.

More flexible trips, such as European itineraries or adult-only all-inclusive resorts, can sometimes be planned closer to departure, but even then, starting earlier gives you better pricing, better room categories, and more breathing room.

A good rule of thumb:

  • Theme parks and cruises: 9–18 months ahead
  • Destination weddings and honeymoons: 12–18 months ahead
  • Europe and custom itineraries: 6–12 months ahead
  • All-inclusive resorts: 4–9 months ahead

Planning early doesn’t mean committing early. It means making informed decisions without the pressure of “what’s left.”
